Our Story

Princeton Eye Group was founded on a simple but powerful belief: that patients in Central New Jersey deserve the same level of eye care found at the world's greatest ophthalmic institutions, delivered with the warmth and personal attention of a community practice.

Where It All Began

In 1980, Dr. Stephen Felton founded Princeton Eye Group with a vision that went far beyond a single practice. Having trained as a resident at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, one of the most respected eye institutions in the world, Dr. Felton understood firsthand what exceptional ophthalmology looked like. He also understood something equally important: that no single physician could master every dimension of eye care alone. Shortly after founding the practice, Dr. Felton brought on Dr. Michael Wong, a fellow Wills Eye Hospital alumnus whose talent, ambition, and shared philosophy would prove instrumental in shaping everything Princeton Eye Group would become.

Together, Drs. Felton and Wong built something that had never existed in Central New Jersey: a physician-owned ophthalmology group that combined the subspecialty depth of a major academic center with the accessibility and personal connection of a local practice. From the beginning, the culture of the practice was defined by collaboration, shared knowledge, and a collective commitment to clinical excellence that no single physician could achieve alone.

Inspired by the World's Best

The vision for Princeton Eye Group was shaped by the institutions where its founders trained. Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, Johns Hopkins University Wilmer Eye Institute, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, and Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, four of the most celebrated eye centers in the world, set the standard that Princeton Eye Group has aspired to from its first day. These institutions represent the gold standard in ophthalmic care, education, and research, and their influence is felt in every aspect of how Princeton Eye Group approaches patient care today.

The founders' experience at Wills Eye Hospital was both inspiring and humbling. They saw what was possible when exceptional physicians worked together, sharing knowledge, challenging each other, and placing the patient's outcome above all else. That model of collaborative, subspecialty-driven care became the blueprint for Princeton Eye Group.

Growth Rooted in Purpose

From a single office in Princeton, the practice grew steadily, driven not by corporate ambition but by the recognition that serving Central New Jersey well meant expanding the depth and breadth of care available to its patients. Drs. Felton and Wong pioneered state-of-the-art laser vision correction in the region. Today, that legacy of excellence continues at the Princeton Eye Group’s LASIK and Vision Correction Center.

New physicians joined the team, each fellowship-trained, each bringing subspecialty expertise that further expanded what the practice could offer.

Today, Princeton Eye Group includes 11 ophthalmologists and 3 optometrists covering nearly every subspecialty of ophthalmology, operating across three locations in Princeton, Monroe Township, and Somerset, with affiliated surgical centers serving the region. The practice remains proudly physician-owned and independent, free from private equity influence, guided entirely by the clinical judgment of the doctors who built it.

The Same Mission, More Than Four Decades Later

What has not changed in nearly 50 years is the reason the Princeton Eye Group exists. The enduring goal, combining the world-class expertise of a tertiary care center with the warmth and personal attention of a community practice, is as true today as it was when Dr. Felton opened the doors in 1980. Every physician who has joined the team has done so because they believe in that mission. Every patient who walks through our doors benefits from it.

This is a practice built by physicians who care deeply about their patients, their community, and their craft. It always has been and always will be.
