Vision Rehabilitation Through Specialty Lenses

At Princeton Eye Group, we offer a comprehensive range of specialty contact lenses designed to restore vision for patients whose corneal conditions cannot be adequately corrected with glasses or traditional soft contact lenses. These customized lenses are often recommended for patients with keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration, post-LASIK ectasia, corneal transplants, corneal scarring, and other corneal disorders. With a wide range of lens options available, our team can tailor treatment to each patient's unique eye shape, visual needs, and lifestyle.

Our specialty lens options include scleral lenses, corneal rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses, hybrid lenses, piggyback lens systems, and custom soft contact lenses.

Scleral Lenses

Scleral lenses are large-diameter rigid lenses that vault entirely over the corneal surface and rest on the white of the eye (the sclera). Because they do not touch the cornea directly, they create a smooth, stable optical surface over even the most irregular corneas, providing exceptional visual correction for patients for whom other lens types have failed. Scleral contact lenses in Princeton, Monroe Township, & Somerset, NJ, are the gold standard for vision rehabilitation in keratoconus and many other complex corneal conditions, and they are the primary focus of our specialty lens program at Princeton Eye Group.

Scleral Lenses for Ocular Surface Protection

Beyond vision correction, scleral lenses serve an important therapeutic role for patients with ocular surface disease. By vaulting over the cornea and maintaining a reservoir of preservative-free saline throughout the day, scleral lenses continuously bathe and protect the ocular surface, promoting comfort and supporting corneal healing.

They can provide significant relief for patients with severe dry eye disease, ocular graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), neurotrophic keratitis, limbal stem cell deficiency, Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, and other conditions affecting the ocular surface.

Other Specialty Lens Options

Corneal Rigid Gas Permeable Lenses

RGP lenses provide excellent optical clarity for a wide range of prescriptions, including high astigmatism and multifocal needs. Their rigid design maintains a consistent optical surface on the eye, while their durable material offers excellent longevity and is easy to care for. They require an adaption period but many will find success after.

Hybrid Lenses

Hybrid lenses combine a rigid gas permeable center with a soft lens skirt, offering the optical clarity of an RGP lens with improved comfort and easier adaptation. They are a useful option for patients who need the vision quality of a rigid lens but struggle with RGP comfort.

Piggyback Lens Systems

In a piggyback system, a rigid lens is worn over a soft contact lens to improve comfort while maintaining the optical benefits of the rigid design. This approach is used in select patients where standard RGP wear alone is not well tolerated.

Custom Soft Contact Lenses

For patients whose prescriptions fall outside the range of standard disposable lenses, custom soft lenses can be designed with a broader range of powers and curvatures, including multifocal and toric designs for astigmatism.

Soft Prosthetic and Tinted Contact Lenses

Soft prosthetic contact lenses are custom-designed to improve both the appearance and function of the eye. They are an excellent option for patients with eye injuries, congenital iris abnormalities, previous eye surgery, corneal scarring, or other conditions affecting the natural appearance of the eye. Prosthetic lenses can also significantly reduce debilitating light sensitivity (photophobia) in affected patients.

Tinted contact lenses are available for sports and outdoor activities, offering benefits such as reduced glare, enhanced contrast, and improved visual comfort. They are a popular option for athletes across a range of sports, including golf, baseball, tennis, soccer, basketball, and volleyball.

Advanced Fitting Technologies

Scleral lenses in New Jersey have advanced significantly in recent years, and Princeton Eye Group utilizes some of the most sophisticated diagnostic and lens design technologies available to customize each lens to the individual patient's eye.

OVITZ and WaveDyn

Patients with keratoconus often experience five to six times higher-order aberrations than normal eyes, producing ghosting, shadowing, halos, and debilitating glare at night. Using advanced wavefront aberrometry, we can measure these optical distortions and design customized lenses to address them directly, improving visual quality beyond what standard lens designs can achieve.

Pentacam CSP and sMap3D

These technologies create detailed, precise maps of the front surface of the eye, including the cornea and sclera. By accurately characterizing the shape of the entire ocular surface, we can design scleral lenses with a more accurate fit, improving both comfort and performance.

EyePrint

For patients with highly irregular or difficult-to-fit eyes, EyePrint creates a custom scleral lens from a physical impression of the eye's surface, similar to how a dentist takes an impression for a custom dental appliance. This technology makes it possible to design a truly one-of-a-kind lens for even the most complex corneal conditions.

Meet Our Specialty Lens Specialist

Princeton Eye Group's specialty contact lens program is led by Dr. Kevin J. Feng, OD, a fellow of both the American Academy of Optometry and the Scleral Lens Society. Dr. Feng completed a dedicated cornea and contact lens residency at Salus University and trained under Dr. Clark Chang at Wills Eye Hospital.

His primary clinical focus is vision rehabilitation for patients with keratoconus and irregular corneas, and he works collaboratively with our corneal surgeons, Dr. Anita Miedziak and Dr. Rahul Tonk, to provide integrated, coordinated care for patients at every stage of their corneal condition.
