What Is Refractive Surgery?

Refractive surgery refers to a category of surgical procedures designed to correct refractive errors, like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, by permanently reshaping the cornea or replacing the eye's natural lens with an artificial one. The goal is to reduce or eliminate dependence on glasses and contact lenses by addressing the optical imperfections that cause blurred vision at its source.

Different procedures are suited to different prescriptions, corneal profiles, ages, and lifestyle needs, and the selection of the most appropriate option requires a thorough evaluation and an honest conversation about goals and expectations. Princeton Eye Group offers the complete spectrum of refractive procedures, ensuring that every patient has access to the option genuinely best suited to their individual eyes.

LASIK

LASIK

LASIK is the world's most widely performed elective surgical procedure, using an excimer laser to precisely reshape the cornea and correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Princeton Eye Group surgeons perform blade-free, all-laser LASIK at our LASIK and Vision Correction Department, one of New Jersey's most experienced refractive centers.

PRK

PRK

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is a laser vision correction procedure that achieves the same corneal reshaping as LASIK without the creation of a corneal flap, making it an excellent option for patients with thin corneas, certain corneal irregularities, or active lifestyles where flap-related concerns are a consideration.

EVO ICL

EVO ICL

The EVO Implantable Collamer Lens is a premium additive lens implanted between the iris and the natural crystalline lens, correcting nearsightedness and astigmatism without removing any corneal tissue. The EVO ICL is an outstanding option for patients who are not candidates for laser vision correction or who prefer a removable, additive approach to vision correction.

Custom Lens Replacement

Custom Lens Replacement

Also known as refractive lens exchange, this procedure involves replacing the eye's natural lens with a premium intraocular lens to correct refractive error and presbyopia. Custom lens replacement may be an excellent option for select patients, often over 45, who want to address presbyopia and distance vision in a single lens-based procedure.

I cannot express how incredibly happy I am with Princeton Eye Group. I have worn glasses since I was a child and I received Lasik surgery from Dr. Liu and have cried tears of joy over and over since. I am so very thankful that I found this office. The staff was friendly, patient and informative and I experienced virtually no wait for any of my appointments. Dr. Liu made no effort to "sell" me on the procedure and was incredibly straight forward on what outcome he both expected and hoped for so that I could make a clearly educated decision. I went into the surgery happy to accept that "success" for my case would be that I could again wear contacts where I have not been able to for at least 5 years. Through the outstanding medical care and state of the art technology offered at Princeton Eye Group I am beyond happy to share that I am now 20/20 in both eyes. To say it is a dream come true is an absolute understatement. I cannot thank the office enough for their wonderful care and highly educated and skilled set of professionals they have working there. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

From start to finish - Princeton Eye Group was an all around 10! I was a patient of Dr. Michael Wong who performed my Lasik. This was something I wanted to do for years but could not work up the courage. I am so glad I made the decision of making a consult appointment with Dr. Wong! During the consult he made me feel so comfortable that I booked my surgery that very day. The day of surgery was a breeze. The very friendly staff fully prepared me for what to expect during and after surgery. The surgery took about 15 minutes and was completely painless. Dr. Wong talked me through the whole process in a patient and caring way. I made my surgery appointment later in the day so I was able to go home and go directly to sleep. I woke up the next morning with 20/20 vision, felt great and drove myself to my post op appointment. Making this decision was life changing for me and I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Wong and his staff.

I've always have a very pleasant experience at Princeton Eye Group. I have a difficult prescription and at each visit they work hard to get it exactly right. The other, more exceptional experience I had was in regard to Lasik. I went in for a consultation, desperate to end my reliance upon contacts. They have the best reputation in town for a reason. After a thorough exam by a nurse and two doctors, they informed me that my surgery would be borderline effective, if not dangerous. They also told me to be wary of anyone who agreed to do it. Rather than make the money and put me at risk, they chose the ethical route without flinching.

There was absolutely NO PAIN. There is just 20 seconds of weirdness, which they had explained before they started. The next day my vision was 25/20 and it will continue to improve. I couldn't be more pleased and just sorry I waited so long. I feel 20 years younger.

Personalized Vision Correction for Every Patient

No two eyes are the same—and modern vision correction treats them that way. Princeton Eye Group's refractive surgeons use advanced diagnostic technology to map the unique characteristics of each patient's cornea, prescription, and visual system before recommending a procedure or designing a treatment plan.

Whether that means topography-guided LASIK to address subtle corneal irregularities, a toric EVO ICL to correct astigmatism alongside high myopia, or a premium lens selected to match a patient's specific lifestyle and visual goals, every recommendation at Princeton Eye Group is built around the individual, not a template. This level of customization is what separates a truly exceptional refractive program from a high-volume commercial center.

LASIK & Vision Correction Frequently Asked Questions

Am I a candidate for LASIK?

LASIK candidacy depends on a number of factors, including corneal thickness, the degree of refractive error, pupil size, ocular health, and lifestyle considerations. The best way to determine whether you are a candidate is through a comprehensive refractive evaluation at Princeton Eye Group, which includes detailed corneal mapping and a thorough assessment of your ocular health. Consultations are offered at no charge.

What is the difference between LASIK and PRK?

Both LASIK and PRK use an excimer laser to reshape the cornea and correct refractive error, but they differ in how the corneal surface is accessed. LASIK creates a thin corneal flap that is lifted before laser treatment and replaced afterward. At the same time, PRK removes the surface epithelium entirely before laser treatment, which then regenerates over the following days. PRK has a longer recovery than LASIK but is preferred for patients with thin corneas or certain corneal irregularities.

What if I am not a candidate for laser vision correction?

Patients who are not candidates for LASIK or PRK may be excellent candidates for the EVO ICL or custom lens replacement, both of which correct refractive error without reshaping the cornea. Princeton Eye Group's comprehensive range of options means that the majority of patients seeking vision correction have at least one procedure suited to their eyes.

How long do the results of LASIK last?

LASIK produces permanent changes to the corneal shape, and the results are long-lasting for the majority of patients. Some patients experience minor prescription changes over time, particularly as presbyopia develops with age, and a small percentage may benefit from an enhancement procedure years after their original treatment.

Is vision correction surgery safe?

Modern vision correction procedures have excellent safety profiles when performed by experienced surgeons on appropriately selected candidates. Princeton Eye Group's refractive program is led by surgeons with decades of experience, and all procedures are performed with the most advanced technology available at a Center of Excellence designated by Wills Eye Hospital.

Does insurance cover vision correction procedures?

Refractive surgery procedures, including LASIK, PRK, EVO ICL, and custom lens replacement, are elective procedures and are not covered by most medical insurance plans. FSA and HSA funds are generally accepted, and financing options are available to help make these procedures accessible. Our team can discuss costs and payment options during your consultation.

How do I get started?

The first step is scheduling a complimentary refractive consultation at Princeton Eye Group. Our surgeons will perform a comprehensive evaluation of your eyes, review your options, and help you determine the procedure that gives you the best chance of achieving your visual goals. Contact our LASIK and Vision Correction Department to schedule your free consultation in any of our three offices (Princeton, Monroe Township, and Somerset).
